The French missionary Father Pascal requested the original Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok in 1809, and the local Catholic businessman Low Khiok Chiang covered most of the costs. An unnamed French architect worked on it, and it was completed in 1821 during the reign of Rama II.
The church was rebuilt in the Romanesque style between 1910 and 1918, and the article names no architect for the rebuild. It has a red brick exterior and tall square towers flanking the main entrance. The interior has a high ceiling with ornate decorations and stained glass windows. The article does not say how much of the 1821 building survives.
Allied bombing of nearby buildings seriously damaged the church in 1942. It is the principal Catholic church of Thailand and the main church of the Archdiocese of Bangkok.
