Ashford Castle is a five-star hotel near Cong, on the Galway side of Lough Corrib in Ireland. The Anglo-Norman House of Burke built a castle on the site in 1228. In 1715 the Browne family built a hunting lodge in the style of a 17th-century French château. Sir Benjamin Guinness bought the estate in 1852 and added two large Victorian extensions.
Arthur Guinness, Baron Ardilaun, rebuilt the west wing from 1875 to 1881, to designs by James Franklin Fuller and George Ashlin, and added battlements. The walls are limestone. Restoration in the early 1970s added a wing that the article says doubled the castle's size.
Noel Huggard opened it as a hotel in 1939. Red Carnation Hotels carried out a refurbishment from 2013 to 2015 that replaced all 820 windows. It is a protected structure.
