Roger de Montgomery began work around 1067, and the original structure was a motte-and-bailey castle. It has been the seat of the Earls of Arundel and Dukes of Norfolk since the 11th century. It passed to the Howards when Mary FitzAlan married Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, in 1555.
In 1643 the castle was besieged, and its 800 Royalist defenders surrendered after 18 days. Parliament ordered it slighted in 1653, though the article notes that weather probably destroyed more. Charles Howard, 11th Duke, began restoration in 1787, and Henry Howard, 13th Duke, remodeled the interior before Queen Victoria's visit in 1846.
Charles Alban Buckler designed the restructuring for the 15th Duke, carried out by Rattee and Kett of Cambridge. The lead says he worked from the 1890s, while the body says 1875 to 1905. The article names no style. It is Grade I listed and owned by the Duke of Norfolk.
