Edward Durell Stone designed the tower, listed alone in the infobox and in a partnership with Perkins and Will in the text, for Standard Oil of Indiana. Turner Construction was the contractor. Construction began in 1970 and finished in 1973, at a cost of 120 million dollars. It has 83 floors above ground and five below.

The architectural height is 1,136 feet (346.3 m), or 1,189 feet (362.5 m) to the tip. A tubular steel frame with V-shaped perimeter columns resists earthquakes and reduces sway. The original cladding was about 43,000 slabs of Italian Carrara marble, and a 350-pound slab fell through the Prudential Center roof in 1973.

Inspection in 1985 found cracks and bowing, and stainless steel straps were added. From 1990 to 1992 the building was refaced with Mount Airy white granite, at an estimated cost of over 80 million dollars. It was renamed Aon Center in December 1999.
