Hubert de Vendôme began a Romanesque cathedral in the early 11th century, consecrated in 1025 and ravaged by fire in 1032. The nave was rebuilt in Angevin Gothic style in the mid-12th century, and the choir and transept were built from 1235 to 1274. Jean Delespine rebuilt the base of the two towers in the 16th century in Flamboyant Gothic, with a Renaissance central tower. The infobox gives 1523 for completion, though the text puts work on the central tower in 1533 to 1537.
The cathedral is 297 feet (90.5 m) long, and the nave vault is 81 feet (25 m) high. The tallest spire reaches 253 feet (77 m). The altar canopy of 1757 adds Baroque touches.
Kengo Kuma designed a new west porch, opened in April 2026. It is the seat of the Bishop of Angers, and medieval tapestries are shown only on feast days.
