Ananuri was the seat of the dukes of Aragvi, a feudal dynasty that ruled the area from the 13th century. The article names no builder and gives no date for the fortress. It has two fortifications joined by a crenellated curtain wall. The upper one has a large square tower and is well preserved, while the lower one has a round tower and is mostly ruins.

The brick Church of the Virgin dates to the first half of the 17th century. The Church of the Mother of God was built in 1689, with a central dome, richly decorated facades and a carved grapevine cross on the south facade. Most of its frescoes were destroyed in an 18th-century fire.

A rival duchy attacked and burned it in 1739. It has been on the UNESCO tentative list since 2007. The article gives no hours or fees.
