Bayezid I built the fortress in 1393 and 1394, though the infobox gives 1394 alone. It stands on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus at its narrowest point, about 2,160 feet (660 m) wide. The site covers about 75,000 square feet (7,000 m²).
The wall circuit is an irregular pentagon with five watchtowers, and a square main tower stands about 82 feet (25 m) tall. Mehmed II added a wall 6.6 feet (2 m) thick, three more watchtowers, a warehouse and living quarters. The article names no architects or builders.
The fortress was restored from 1991 to 1993 and again from 2021. The article says it is not open to the public.
