Raja Man Singh originally built the fort, and Jai Singh I expanded it in the early 1600s. The article says the palace took 25 years to build and was completed in 1599. It calls the palace a major example of Rajput architecture, with some buildings showing Mughal influence. The materials are red sandstone and marble.
The Diwan-i-Aam, or Public Audience Hall, has 27 colonnades, each with an elephant-shaped capital. The Ganesh Pol is a three-level entry into the Maharajas' private palaces, with many frescoes. In the Sukh Niwas, piped water flows through an open channel to keep the rooms cool.
The fort overlooks Maota Lake, the palace's main water source, and a subterranean passage links it to Jaigarh Fort as a wartime escape route. UNESCO listed it in 2013 as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan. It lies about 6.8 miles (11 km) from Jaipur, reached by a narrow 4WD road to the Suraj Pol entrance.
