The Allianz Arena was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, with Arup as structural engineer. Construction began on October 21, 2002, and the stadium opened on May 30, 2005. Bayern Munich has played here since the 2005-06 season, and TSV 1860 Munich was a tenant until 2017.

Its skin is made of 2,760 inflated panels of ETFE foil that can be lit in red, blue or white, following the colors of the home team. A partial roof covers all seats, and roller blinds can shade the stands. Capacity is 75,024 for domestic matches and 70,000 for international and European games.

The total cost reached 340 million euros, including financing. The stadium opened the 2006 FIFA World Cup, under the name FIFA World Cup Stadium Munich. Since 2012 the FC Bayern Erlebniswelt museum has stood inside.
