Jakob Aljaž, a priest in the village of Dovje, designed the Aljaž Tower and had it erected on the summit of Mount Triglav. In April 1895 he bought the summit for one florin from the Municipality of Dovje. The civil engineer Anton Belec built it with four workers, assembling it on August 7, 1895, in about five hours.

The tower is a cylinder of iron and zinc-coated sheet steel, 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) high and 4.1 feet (1.25 meters) in diameter. It was blessed on August 22, 1895. It serves as a storm shelter and a triangulation point.

In June 1991 the Slovenian flag was raised at the tower when independence was proclaimed. A helicopter removed it for restoration on September 7, 2018, and returned it on October 3. It is a site of national cultural importance.
