Carlo Rossi designed the theater for the Imperial troupe of Petersburg, which the article says was founded in 1756. It was built from 1828 to 1832 on Alexandrinsky Square, now Ostrovsky Square, on Nevsky Prospekt between the National Library of Russia and Anichkov Palace. It opened on September 12, 1832. The article calls it an Empire-style building and gives no materials or dimensions.

The theater staged dramas, operas and ballets before it became a dramatic theater in the 1880s, a change in programming rather than in the building. It reopened on August 30, 2006 after a reconstruction.

It is part of the UNESCO site Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg. The article also calls the company the National Drama Theatre of Russia.
