Giacomo Quarenghi designed the palace, which Catherine II commissioned for her grandson, Grand Duke Alexander Pavlovich, the future Alexander I. It was tied to his marriage in 1793 and built from 1792 to 1796. The article calls the style neoclassical. It gives no dimensions or materials, and says the palace lies about 30 miles (48 km) south of Saint Petersburg.
From 1830 to 1850 it was extensively redecorated by several designers, including A. Stakenschneider. Under Nicholas II, the former two-story ballroom was remodeled into the Maple Room and the New Study, and the palace gained electricity, a telephone system and a hydraulic lift in 1899. The Maple and Mauve Rooms are Jugendstil.
Emergency roof repairs came in 1996, and a multi-year restoration of the imperial family's quarters ran from 2015 to 2021. The east wing reopened to visitors in August 2021 as a state museum, and the west wing is still being renovated.
