Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa built the mosque in 1987, according to the text, and the infobox gives completion in 1988. It is named in honor of Ahmed Al Fateh. The article names no architect. The infobox lists concrete, fiberglass, marble and teak, with Italian marble flooring and teak doors from India.
It measures 328 feet (100 m) by 246 feet (75 m), with an interior area of about 70,000 square feet (6,500 m²). The infobox lists four domes with an outer diameter of 79 feet (24 m), while the text describes a single fiberglass dome weighing 54 tonnes, which it calls the world's largest without verifying it. Kufic calligraphy runs throughout, and there are two minarets.
It holds 7,000 worshippers in the infobox and over 7,000 in the text. The National Library of Bahrain moved into the building in 2006. The mosque is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Friday.
