Bernard Tschumi, with the Greek architect Michael Photiadis, won the fourth competition, held by invitation. An earlier winning design by Manfredi Nicoletti and Lucio Passarelli was annulled in 1999 after excavations halted. The museum opened on June 20, 2009. The article gives no construction dates and names no style.

It has 150,700 square feet (14,000 m²) of exhibition space on three levels, with a middle level for auxiliary spaces. Glass floors let visitors see the excavations below. The top-level Parthenon Gallery has glass on four sides, 48 columns spaced as on the temple, and a frieze facing outward.

It stands 919 feet (280 m) from the Parthenon. A 2007 plan to demolish two historic buildings drew protests. Admission in 2024 was 10 euros in winter and 15 in summer, and it had 2,000,312 visitors.
