Edward I built the castle as part of his Welsh campaign, on a site north of an earlier motte-and-bailey castle. Work began in 1277 and finished in 1289, at a cost of 4,000 pounds. It is probably the work of master mason James of St George, a point the infobox states more firmly than the text. It is a diamond-shaped concentric castle, with an inner ward that has a twin D-shaped gatehouse keep and corner towers, and a narrow outer ward around it. The infobox gives siltstone.
The Welsh took and burned it in 1282. Owain Glyndŵr captured it in 1404, and the English retook it in 1408. Charles I's mint operated in the castle hall from 1637 to 1642. Cromwell's forces slighted it in 1649.
Aberystwyth Town Council controls it, and it is open to the public. It is a Grade I listed ruin.
