Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller designed the city hall, following a decision taken in 1937. It was inaugurated on June 2, 1941. Hans Wegner oversaw the furnishing and parts of the interior. A tower was added after public pressure on the original plans, which had none. The article names no style. It is concrete plated with about 6,000 square meters of grey marble from Norway, with copper details that have turned green.
The total area is 19,380 square meters with the basement. The tower is 197 feet (60 m) tall, and the clock face is 23 feet (7 m) across. The cost was 9.5 million Danish kroner.
It was marked for preservation in March 1994 and included in the Danish Culture Canon for architecture in January 2006. It stands in Rådhusparken near the central station.
