Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed it with Wurster, Bernardi and Emmons, and Pietro Belluschi consulted. H. J. Brunnier Associates were the structural engineers. It was completed in 1969 and was the world headquarters of Bank of America until the 1998 merger with NationsBank. The article names no style, and says the bay windows and irregular cutouts evoke the Sierra Nevada.

The tower is clad in carnelian granite. It has 52 stories and rises 779 feet (237 m), with 1,969,979 square feet of floor area and 38 elevators. The plaza holds a 200-ton black granite sculpture, Transcendence, by Masayuki Nagare.

Vornado holds 70 percent and the Trump Organization holds 30 percent. The Carnelian Room on the 52nd floor closed on New Year's Eve 2009. In 2018 the USGS listed it among welded high-rises that may be at risk in strong earthquakes.
