Raymond Hood was lead architect with the Associated Architects of Rockefeller Center, for the developer John D. Rockefeller Jr. Superstructure work began in March 1932, the steel topped out on September 26, 1932, and the first tenant moved in on April 22, 1933. The official opening was delayed to mid-May over the controversy about Diego Rivera's mural.

The style is Art Deco. It has a 66-story east tower, a windowless central section and a 16-story west annex. The facade is Indiana limestone with aluminum spandrels. The infobox and lead give 850 feet (260 m), and the body gives 872 feet (266 m).

The Top of the Rock observation deck is on the 70th story, with a triple-height observatory on floors 67 to 69. It opened in 1933, closed in 1986 and reopened after a 2005 renovation. It had about 2.5 million visitors in 2011.
